How is lactate measured?

The lactate content of the blood is measured using the lactate pro (figure 4a). A pin prick is made in the individual’s ear using a sterile single use lancet (figure 4b). A drop of blood from the ear is placed on the lactate pro and takes one minute to analyse. This reading is taken at the beginning of the test, at the end of each exercising stage during the test, at the end of the test and finally post recovery. Depending on the conditioning of the individual, 6-8 samples are taken per test.

Figure 4 (a) The lactate pro is the device used to measure blood levels of lactate.

Figure 4 (b) The single use sterile lancet is used to make the pin prick in the individual’s ear. Blood samples derived from here are used to measure lactate.
